BME 480 - Parental Involvement in Bilingual and ESL Contexts

Dr. Roberto Luis Carrasco

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

HERE ARE THE ASSIGNMENT ACTIVITIES FOR FALL BME 480 STUDENTS

This is assignment is in lieu of the class meeting during the week of Thanksgiving. This is not hard work but it is interesting. I think you will enjoy exploring the gang sites. When I receive your work I will note that you have been in class for this week. If you do not do the work, you must come to see me immediately.

To be accomplished by November 29, 2000 12 Noon.

1. Home Schooling Net Research

Do a net search on home schooling looking for two models that include ESL, bilingual education, and/or multicultural education.

First, identify each web site (e.g., www.homeschool.org), followed by a brief review of both of them (one paragraph each) informing about the nature of ESL, bilingual and/or multicultural instruction. Finally, end with a brief paragraph on what aspects of these models you believe are significant to you as an educator.

Send to me via e-mail (either as an attachment or in the body of the message)your findings for this activity and identify your message to me as Re: Homeschool.

2. Street Gangs

Search the net for interesting gangs sites that you think are very useful to teachers!!!!! Be prepared to discuss some of your explorations on the net in class

Identify four gang sites (e.g., http://www.gangs.org ) and then write a one or two sentence identifier for each.

The purpose of this activity is to share these sites with your peers. I will put a master list together for all students.

The Crips, the Bloods, 18th Street, First Street, Hazard, are but a few names of popular gangs in LA. If you are interested in gangs of a certain culture such as Vietnamese American gangs, Hawaiian gangs, Haitian gangs, etc., simply add that cultural name to your search. See if you can locate sites that deal with Native American/American Indian youth gangs on the reservations in Arizona! In the United States? Police sites on gangs are plentiful. See if your old neighborhood has gang activity.

Send to me via e-mail(either as an attachment or in the body of the message) your findings for this activity and identify your message to me as Re: GANGS.

NOTE: the VCC button is not part of the lesson!
