E

Savors self and begins self control

Trust vs. Mistrust
This is still the major job of the child and caretaker

Tantrums are common but blow over" without toddler resentment

Limit setting is crucial

Express pleasure in the child

  • nonverbal messages
  • voice tones
  • reinforcement
  • pride in "doing"

Great need for a sense of safety and ritual "Do it again..."

Fears begin - need to be accorded understanding

  • P

    Pre-moral stage

Does not understand right from wrong

Not yet able to "hurt" others intentionally

Toddler is "driven" to have own way -

  • strong need to "be" and be loved for self

"NO" and "ME do it" are a constant reminder of the child's need for feeling in control -- this is a drive rather than a preference

Choices work best in helping the child to feel in control and minimize tantrums and power struggles

    Craves routine, structure, consistency

  • S

Referent continues to be mother, but second person will become important during this year. May be sitter, dad, sibling.

Child models the actions of those s/he sees, spends time with

Stranger anxiety can occur and is very real to some toddlers

Autonomy is a driving force for the child and egocentrism is a key

All in child's world of recognition still are the reflection of the child who is still at the center of everything

Social system begins to make a big impact on the child - family position, joie de vivre

    Nip aggression with firmness, consistency

     I

    Sensory-motor thinking stage

Conservation of matter-loves "peek-a-boo" throws toys out of sight and reach to play "fetch"

Works at casual ideas and opposites i.e. "if I do this...
    up/down
    in/out"

Language development is astonishing and complex

First two years of life are greatest time of learning when compared to whole of life
