Hello all, my name is Sherrie Kuhn, and I would like to tell you about myself.
First, I was born in Imperial, Nebraska, but moved to Torrington, Wyoming where
I lived until 1985. While I lived in Torrington I had a lot of exposure and experience
working with the disabled. It all started when I was five years of age. Both my
parents were coaches for the Special Olympics, and I was there to cheer and give
hugs to the participants, which I remember very well and loved. Then when I was
eight or nine I helped in a "Little Red House," which was a resource room, across
from my elementary school, and did during the summer. I walked a little girl from
this little red house, with Down Syndrome, to and from the pool for her swimming
lessons. Then, in 1985, we moved to Safford, Arizona where I continued my exposer
to helping out the disabled. It started in eighth grade, when I volunteered at
an elementary school in the Special Ed. resource room, and they ranged from K-3rd
grade. I helped them with their math and reading skills, and they nicked named
my Sherbear. I also was an assistant with the Special Olympics with the children,
and adults from Safford, which was held in Phoenix, AZ. Then in High School, my
Jr.. and Sr. year I took a lab that allowed me to return to the same teacher and
school. This time I mostly worked with the children on their Physical Therapy,
along with their reading and math skills. After High School I continued to volunteer,
when I could, in a adult group home. I have also helped my mother in her Special
Ed. classroom. This brings me to why I have decided to become a Elementary/Special
Ed. teacher. I started out to major in Speech Pathology like my father and brother,
but I had a very difficult time with the classes. My parents knew my heart was
to become a Special Ed. teacher, so here I am. Well, I can't wait to learn about
the rest of you, so bye for now. See you all on the web. Sherrie Kuhn
