I was born in Yuma, Arizona more than 21 years ago, but less than 45. I learned
that my niche in life was in education only 4 years ago. Before that I had spent
17 years, most of them unhappy in the business world as a customer service representative.
I began working as a speech language assistant 4 years ago for Yuma School District
#1. I couldn't believe that people got paid to do what I was enjoying so much.
I loved working with all students but found a very special place in my heart for
the special needs child. I realized that this was what I really enjoyed doing
and wanted to keep doing. Soon after that realization I began taking classes at
the Junior College working toward transferring to NAU and a degree in education.
I began by taking classes only part time, but soon realized I wanted to move through
faster and soon became a full time student along with working full time for Yuma
School District #1 and being a mother and wife. I completed my general education
classes and was accepted into the "Dreams Program" for the Spring of 2000. This
program is an answer to my prayers on how to afford to attend NAU. I look forward
to the day when I receive my certification and am able to be a teacher and hopefully
pass on some of the caring and love that many special education teachers now give.
Further, I am widow of a little over a year, this situation has meant many adjustments
to many things in my life. But with the help and support of my family and many
friends I have been able to adjust. I am also the mother of two teenage boys,
ages 15 and 14 years. The two boys, work and school keep me very busy and on my
toes. My hobbies when I am on break from school or work include, reading novels,
especially romance, those written in Spanish, and mystery. I also enjoy sewing,
fishing and baking bread.
