Wall Assignment

With Welch, Hobbs, the Classics, and Lohr, on the back burner, as well as the class discussion floating in our memories, look around at the walls in LA 317 and LA227. We purposefully did not put anything up on the walls because we had this assignment in mind as a future possibility.

Choose a partner and a section of the wall. That section is for you to design. If you choose the area with a clock, please incorporate the clock into your design. If you choose a section with a shadow/light, consider this as you design and create. Have fun and good luck!

Assignment:

Purpose: Communicate an idea without many words. Let the grids and placement of color help with the communication. You'll use 4 to 6 grids (basically 4 to 6 sheets of paper, 8.5x11).

With a partner(s) decide on size, and color. Remember you must use 1 color besides black and white (and grays).

Please do not spend lots of $ on this design. Be creative. Use the computer, construction paper, butcher paper, notebook paper, whatever you wish. Most likely you'll want to revise this project as the term continues (you'll need to revise 2 items by the end of the term for your portfolio). So I wouldn't spend a lot of hours on it—not yet. Wait until you get feedback on your idea.

Consider your audience! Try to communicate with the group who'll working near your design. Do not work with concepts that need you there to explain what the image(s) mean. Simple is good.(Remember the work in the Wettaw building).

Have your design/ideas ready to go on next Monday, September 22nd.
The actual Wall Hanging will take place the following Monday, September 29nd.

Talk about your design in relation to Welch, Hobbs, Lohr, the Classics, as well as Lanham and Kenney (week 3's reading assignments). When does theory inform your practice? What might Welch or Hobbs say about your work? Can you use any of Lohr's language to help you talk about your work?
