MOD 1 Assignment
Each module consists of an introduction by the professor, helpful hints,
and things to think about as you are reading the assignments listed on
the schedule. At the end of each of the modules are the questions you
will need to answer in written form and submit to the professor. One question
will always ask you to relate a current event or experience to the content
of the module. Current events, news items, public meetings or your job
are all fair game for fodder. As explained in the syllabus, the answers
are due single-spaced in 12 pt font by 5pm on the Monday a new module
begins, or the Monday of finals week by 5pm in the case of Module
3 (see schedule). E-mail your responses to me at d.hawley@nau.edu
unless otherwise directed. This is the written assignment for Module 1,
due the week we begin Module 2. Make sure you keep a copy on disk.
Questions:
1.Explain what the built environment is and what it reflects. Given societal
and capitalistic influences, is planning necessary? Why or why not.
2.How have theories been reflected by planning movements? Have movements
influenced policy? Can you characterize the shifts in thought that have
occurred?
3.Is zoning justified? Are comprhensive and community plans necessary
in today's regulatory society?
4. Is the planning process unbiased? Explain. Are there changes you would
make?
5. Can functionality, sustainability, culture, capitalism, and innovation
coexist successfully in today's planning situations? Or do we relegate
some to the sidelines?
From your folders/experience:
Choose an article or experience that relates to zoning. Explain the situation,
any pros and cons you can think of, and what you think the outcome should
be and why.
Once you have finished you should:
Go on to Community
Issues and Growth
or
Go back to Planning Process and Documents
