Planning in the USA skim ch.15, 16

Holding Our Ground ch.1 pp.1-9, ch 14 (Repeat from last week for those of you needing more time)

Marsh, William, Landscape Planning: Environmental Applications, John Wiley, New York, ©1997, pp. 135-145,155-165, 174-181. , part1, part 2

Earth Day Network. 2002. Sustainability Starts in Your Community: A Community Indicators Guide. http://www.sustainable.doe.gov/measuring/mpedtoc.shtml You should skim this. This has multiple uses depending on what you select as indicators and a purpose. Its key, however is in thinking about the entire system rather than one small part. Very practical steps.

http://www.firewise.org Open the tips for making your property fire wise (front page center) and the firewise community/usa link on the left. The urban-wildland interface is a dynamic area and can be very prone to fire disasters. Flagstaff is trying to become the first firewise city in the nation (entire city, not just community). Unfortunately the firewise organization does not have standards for a city - just for parts of a city or community.

Flink, C. 2001. Pp. 6-28 from:,Trails for the 21st Century: Washington D.C., Island Press.

Browse just a couple of the news articles. Note the types of conflicts that are occuring as well as positive uses of resources. Make sure to visit the USFS and ADWR sites. The forest service is impacted greatly by urbanization. ADWR is also impacted, but it also significantly impacts development through Active Management Areas and policy. Think about the impact of growth and personal desires on the physical landscape.
