Route 66 for Researchers   Small Route 66 .gif
Wigwam, Holbrook, AZ
This page is designed to help those doing research on Route 66. All of the materials listed below are available in the Cline Library at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona.
The campus of Northern Arizona University is situated on the 1926-1967 alignment of Route 66, and as such is ideally placed to chronicle the impact of Route 66 on localities in Northern Arizona, and elsewhere along the road. While much has been printed about Route 66, there is still much serious, historical work to be done.
Not far from Flagstaff to the West the longest continuous paved and maintained stretch of Route 66 stretches out across Arizona's high desert terrain from just west of the town of Ash Fork all the way to the Colorado River and California. Determined travellers and researchers can drive much of old Route 66 all across northern Arizona by using appropriate maps and guide books.  This will involve accessing many dead ends, and unpaved stretches of Route 66 with a light truck, or four-wheel drive (being ever mindful of private property). From Flagstaff on to the east, there are only limited driveable stretches of Route 66. There are several wonderful sections of the old road in Winslow, Joseph City and Holbrook as well as many memorable and historic stops like Meteor City, Jackrabbit, and Chief Yellowhorse.
Listed below are books, government publications, video tapes, and periodicals dealing with Route 66's history in Arizona and the United States. If you are not a resident of Flagstaff or northern Arizona, many of these materials are available via Interlibrary Loan from your local library. If you have questions regarding this list, or the materials listed below, please e-mail Sean Evans at sean.evans@nau.edu.
