Professional Information

I've been in the teaching profession for many years, and I have participated in many exchanges about how to encourage students to become life-long learners. My own experiences as an educator have helped me understand the various paths that students take to achieve their goals.

Professional background

My teaching and research are closely impacted by the student populations at Northern Arizona University, by the histories and politics of the state, and by the contributions of the culturally and ethnically diverse population. It is also influenced by my own background and my own experiences growing up in Austria.

  • I was born and raised in a small town in Austria. Most of my schooling took place in Stephanshart, Ardagger, Amstetten and Vienna. I studied English and History at the University of Vienna where I was given an opportunity to participate in a Fulbright exchange program at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
  • After spending one year studying in the Department of English and the Department of History at the University of Illinois, I returned to Vienna were I was able to apply the courses I had taken at the University of Illinois toward my bachelor's degree. But my experiences studying in Illinois had convinced me that I wanted to return and complete a Master's in English. And after the Master's degree, I continued in the PhD program in Writing Studies where I found my passion for the study of rhetoric.
  • Currently, I teach at Northern Arizona University which is located at 7,000 feet in the northern part of Arizona. Flagstaff is a border town to the Navajo and Hopi reservations, is close to the Grand Canyon, and provides students with many educational opportunities in and outside the classroom.
