Content Matters
Adapted from What Every Great Teacher Knows by R. Gibboney and C. Webb
Principle:
Every great teacher knows that essential content is knowledge of general social
significance that is relevant to all students, whatever their abilities or interests.
Principle:
Every great teacher knows that content must be related to the needs of the local
and regional community. It is intended to improve the quality of future living
for both the community and the individual. Content must illuminate significant
social issues.
Principle:
Every great teacher knows that content does not consist exclusively in information
or data readily available in books, computers or other media. Rather, good content
is subject matter that assists learners in their inquiry and their attempt to
create meaning.
Facts taught as discrete, isolated items have little meaning and relevance
for students, especially adult students who have a great many other things vying
for their attention. While your discipline or course may be of compelling interest
to you, do not assume that this is the case for your students. Choose important
content and link it to your students.
There is considerable debate about "dumbing down" the curriculum in
higher ed. Relate your choice of content back to Essential
Questions to ensure that you are not contributing to this perception.
