Plants

TREES

Ponderosa pines are native trees. Russian Olives, Siberian Elms, Colorado Blue Spruce, Austrian Pine, Pioneer Elm, Ash, Pin Oak, English Oak, Maple, Bing Cherry, Cottonwoods, and Poplars have all done well in this Zone 5 climate with harsh extremes due to wind and exposure from the back side of the San Francisco Peaks.

Plants here need protection from the winds and temperature fluxuations. Using concrete blocks and stone to capture radient heat during the day from the abundant sunshine provides a much needed buffer from sudden temperature drops at night. A closed in area allows many perrenials to do well here. We chose a concrete block wall to provide some heating for the plants at night as well as durable wind protection. Containers give more control over soil, feeding, and pest control/isolation and the plants are easier to move around! However, as most days are sunny and warm in the summer, watering is a daily event for container plants. The UV levels at 7,000 ft. are very high and most plants benefit from a little shade during some part of the day. Combining different sizes and styles can add more interest.
Yes - I use composted llama, horse and donkey manure. I mix it with potting soil and put a layer on in the fall before the first snow fall so the nutrients can work down into the soil through the long winter. A few container plants can make an outdoor space look lush. Marigolds are a good team with Lobelias.
Pink Fairy is an ideal container rose for a patio. The blooms are small but the plant blooms literally all summer. They should be fertilized regularly - I provide a liquid feed every two weeks. A water feature is not only a must for a focal point of interest, but it also draws birds. Petunias in a pot (well hidden) nestled in a Red Fairy Rose plant near Horehound, purple Bee Balm and Winecups (Callirhoe). A Blue Rug Juniper sprawls across the feet.

Deadheading (picking off those spent blooms) keep the petunias and marigolds blooming all summer long. These are mixed in with white dianthus. Star Gazer Lily - a beloved lily from the florists is VERY easy to grow. It only blooms once - late July to mid August but the bloom is worth it and often there are 3 or more blooms.
