• Key Idea/Concept
6SC-F2: Identify the planets and
their relationship to the sun
|
 |
Performance Objective PO 1: Identify the planets
of the solar
system
| |
 |
Performance Objective PO 2: Describe the
relationship of the planets to the
sun
| | |
|
Understandings: The Solar System is a group
of planets that orbit the Sun.
There are 9 (now maybe 10)
Planets in our Solar System.
The 9 Planets (in order from the
Sun) are: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus,
Neptune, Pluto.
The Planets are different in a variety of
ways from planet Earth-- composition, distance from sun, time it
takes to revolve around sun, etc.
|
Essential
Questions: What is the Solar System?
How many
Planets are in the Solar System?
What are the names of the
Planets?
In what order are the Planets outward from the
Sun?
What are the Planets made of?
How are the Planets
the same? How are they different?
|
Knowledge and
Skills: Prior to the activities students will need to
know how to use a web browser, how to navigate to a specific site in
a web browser, what a search engine is, and how to use a search
engine.
After the activities students should take
away: Knowledge that the Solar System is a group of planets that
orbit the Sun. There are 9 (now maybe 10) Planets in our Solar
System. The 9 Planets (in order from the Sun) are: Mercury, Venus,
Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto. The Planets

| Performance Tasks and Assessment |
 |
Performance
Task: Use a search engine to find the names of the 9
Planets in the Solar System.
Use Kid Pix to draw the Sun, the
9 planets, and their relationship to the Sun. Label the Sun and each
of the 9 planets.
|
Performance
Prompt: What are the 9 Planets in the Solar System in
order from the Sun?
|
Assessment/Rubrics: All 9 Planets were
listed. 3 pts.
Planets were in the correct order from Sun
outward. 4 pts
Names were spelled correctly. 3
pts.

| Learning Experiences and Resources |
 |
Sequence of
Activities: Discuss terminology-- solar system, sun,
planets.
Discuss materials that make up the
planets.
Have students look up the 9 planets in search
engine.
Go to www.solarsystem.org.uk/planet10 and Launch
Planet 10. Read about each of the planets to the students. Show them
information page 3 under solar system which shows pictures of the
planets and relative distances from the Sun.
Have students
draw the Solar System in Kid Pix.
|
Differentiated
Instruction: Special Ed, vision or hearing impaired
will have the material read and explained to them by an
aide.
|
Resources:
- The number of computers required is 1 per student.
- Technology resources:
Kid Pix, FireFox
- Students Familiarity with Software Tool:
how to use a web
browser, how to search with a search
engine
