Biographical Sketch

Gioia Woods earned her BA in English from University of Arizona, her MA in English from Arizona State University, and her Ph.D. in English (American literature) from University of Nevada, Reno, in 1999. She co-edited Western Subjects: Autobiographical Writing in the North American West and wrote the Western Writers Series monograph on Gary Nabhan, along with numerous articles of biographical criticism. She has served on the boards of the Western Literature Association,) the Association for the Study of Literature and Environment and the Arizona Humanities Council and remains active in all three. Her teaching at Northern Arizona University includes introductory humanities studies, southwestern and environmental humanities, and multicultural and women’s arts & ideas. In 2003 she was awarded the President's Teaching/Scholar Award. She grew up in Los Angeles and now makes her home in Flagstaff, Arizona with her family and pets.
