The IMSD PROGRAM at Northern Arizona University
National Institute of Health (NIH): "The main goal of the IMSD [Initiative Maximizing Student Diversity] program is to increase the number of students from groups underrepresented (UR) in the biomedical and behavioral sciences that graduate from Ph.D. programs in these fields at institutions with research-intensive environments."
The IMSD Program at Northern Arizona University (NAU):
- seeks to improve retention, academic achievement and, ultimately, graduate school enrollment of underrepresented minority students in biomedical research fields.
- pays a salary to undergraduates who participate in research in the labs of select faculty mentors from the departments of Biology, Chemistry and Engineering.
- exposes students to issues and opportunities related to minority health disparities through a combination of research experience and coursework.
IMSD students are given the opportunity to conduct research in biology, chemistry, engineering.
Students gain the skills and tools needed to become professional scientists.
