ECI 310 Course Description

This course will focus on language and literacy instruction from kindergarten through eighth grade. This course begins with emergent literacy concepts learned in Integrated Literacy I and further develops those concepts as they impact instruction through the primary grades. Integrated Literacy II supports instruction in child language development, reading, writing, and language arts with current and classic research. Throughout the course students examine the cultural contexts in which children develop language and literacy. Students examine how language and literacy acquisition relate to the development of the whole child, the culture of the individual and the community, and the school climate. Micro-skills and reading strategies such as using cue systems, phonics, word analysis, spelling, grammar, and handwriting are coupled with children's literature, authentic experiences, journals, and other macro strategies to guide children to accomplish the highest standards of language and literacy acquisition. Instruction in authentic and standardized literacy assessment complements assessment methods taught in other professional courses. In addition, students engage in practicum experiences at elementary school sites. This practicum is specifically intended to support literacy instruction and the construction and implementation of age appropriate integrated lesson and unit plans.
