History 430: Applied Teaching Methods in History/Social Studies

This course introduces students to the theory and practices of teaching Social Studies and history. The first part of the course focuses on theories, debates, and issues involved in the teaching of Social Studies and history. The second part of the course considers the practice of history and how to teach it. The final part of the course provides students with the opportunity to teach, including teaching a “mini-lesson” and planning a unit. Throughout the course, we will explore a variety of teaching methods deliberative discussions, jigsaw, lecture, mock trial, debate, using primary sources, web-quest, peer review that should be incorporated into the student’s unit plan.
