Cell and City

In many ways a cell is kind of like a city. I will tell you what each of the organelles in a cell does. Your job will be to try to match each of the cell parts to the parts of a city and explain why they are similar.

a) Golgi Body-labels items and packages them for distribution to other parts of the cell.

b) Vacuole-a container for food or other materials useful to the cell.

c) Chloroplast-uses light energy and CO2 (carbon dioxide) from the air to make sugars.

d) Lysosome-breaks down toxins and waste materials.

e) Mitochondrion-burns food for energy which can be used by the whole cell.

f) Nucleus-contains DNA, the instructions for building and operating the cell.

g) Cell Membrane-regulates what enters and leaves the cell.

h) Endoplasmic Reticulum-a network for transporting proteins across the cell.

i) Ribosome-interprets DNA instructions in order to assemble proteins.

This part of the city ...is like this part of the cell ...because...

1. The Dump

2. City Hall

3. A Power Plant

4. A Factory

5. The Freeway

6. The Post Office

7. The City Limits

8. A Grocery Store

9. A Farm
