Wireless at NAU

1. Connect.

• Scan for wireless networks.
• Official NAU access points or SSIDs are building specific and look like: NAU-B82-G
• Join the NAU wireless network with the strongest signal (Remember the mnemonic...B=bad, G=good, N=Niiiiice!)
• Currently we don't have any official N wireless at NAU, but we do have B and G
• Registering the wireless MAC address is not required.
• You will be assigned a 10.1.x.x IP address rather than the typical NAU 134.114.x.x address.

2. Agree.

• Open a web browser such as Firefox, Internet Explorer or Safari.
• Look for the "Agreement" screen.
• Important: If you don't see it, go to any non-NAU website. For example, go to amazon.com
• Scroll down through the Terms of Use and click the Agree button at the bottom of the screen.
• You can now close that window, and insecure browsing is available.
• Be careful not to use passwords, credit cards, etc., except on https sites.
• Don't stop! Secure services will not work unless you continue.

3. Secure.

• Configure your VPN connection if necessary. You only need to do this once.
• Connect to the NAU VPN (virtual private network) to encrypt your wireless data transmissions.
• You need an NAU username and password to connect to the NAU VPN...sorry, but there's no guest access :(
• Macintosh Users: be sure to check the "Send all traffic over VPN" box in the Advanced... options under System Preferences/Network.
• Use PPTP protocol (point to point tunneling protocol)
• Use server address: vpn.nau.edu
• You might need to login with the NAU domain in front of your NAU ID something like this: "NAU\abc12"
• Non-browser-based Internet-dependent applications like GoogleTalk, Elluminate and Skype will now function properly.
• Connecting to network drives like NAU Shares and Bonsai will now function properly.

Note: In some places around campus, you may still encounter the old "legacy" NAU wireless network with the SSIDs "NAU" and "guest." These instructions refer only to the newer and more common system. The new wireless system works for guests as well as NAU people and registering your wireless MAC address is not required. However, if you are an NAU employee it's a good idea to register both the wireless and ethernet MAC addresses of your laptop because the old wireless requires it for full access.
