Audition Requirements

Horn

 

 Musicians wanting to join the NAU Horn Studio must be accepted at Northern Arizona University and pass an entrance audition with Nancy Sullivan.  Auditions may be scheduled on an individual basis with Ms. Sullivan, or musicians may choose to attend the pre-scheduled audition days at the School of Music here in Flagstaff.  Taped auditions are accepted, though a longer program of music is recommended.

 

 Audition requirements are as follows:

 

 Undergraduate entrance requirements:

Two contrasting movements, pieces or etudes from the standard horn literature.  Some suggestions of music you might prepare are listed below (these are given as suggestions only):

 

 *Mozart, Concertos 1-4; Concert Rondo

*Glazounov, Reveries

*Saint-Saens, Concertpiece; Romance Op. 36

*R. Strauss, Concerto No. 1

*F. Strauss, Concerto Op. 8; Nocturno

*Kopprasch, Sixty Selected Studies

*Kling, 40 Studies

*Maxime-Alphonse, Deux Cents Etudes Nouvelles

 

 Memorized Major scales at least two octaves and sight reading will also be a part of your audition.

 

 Graduate Student Entrance Requirements:

*Hindemith, Sonata for Horn, Sonata for Alto Horn

*Schuller, Studies for Unaccompanied Horn

 

 Memorized Major and minor scales two to three octaves and sight reading will also be a part of your audition.
