Background
The images and text presented here show the paleogeography and tectonic evolution of Southwestern North America during the late Paleozoic but tie into Mesozoic events as well. Emphasis is on the sedimentary basins and adjacent uplifts that comprise the Greater Ancestral Rocky Mountains (GARM). The maps document the complex, dynamic, sedimentologic and tectonic events during a diverse episode of North American geologic history. The images were prepared by placing various stratigraphic, tectonic, and sedimentologic data on a base map and then overlying more detailed landforms such as mountains, plateaus, rivers, volcanoes, and lowlands. The maps were then painted in Photoshop CS ®, mostly by cloning topography from digital elevation maps.
