Below is a brief introduction to the 2001 team:

Sprints

Francis St. Paul returns as the central figure in the sprints group, along with returners Landon Benson, Chris Boyton, Vytautas Kancleris, Nick Wingfield and Daryl Wonsey. The 2000 indoor sprints crew earned 39 points in the 55-meter and 200-meter sprints at the indoor conference championships, along with the 4X100-meter relay team. The sprints crew finished strong at the outdoor conference championships as well, finishing with 36 points in the 100, 200 and 400-meter events. Five of the six point-scorers return for the 2001 season. Newcomers include David Shaw, Javares Washington, Paul Donovan, Matt Kordos, and Clarence Horton.

Hurdles
Returning for the Lumberjacks is the Big Sky record-holder in the 55-meter high hurdles Daryl Wonsey. Before sitting out the outdoor season with a hamstring injury, Wonsey was one of two athletes to compete at the 2000 NCAA Indoor Championships (Linda Nestorsson, shot put). Fast on his heels is junior Vytautas Kancleris who pushed Wonsey last season and finished second at the indoor conference championships and finished third at the outdoor conference championships in the 110-meter event.

Middle Distance
Jared Plemons, Jonathan Coy and freshmen Mark Zanders, Corey Kistler and Travis Townsend will lead the 2001 crew. The middle distance team was not represented in the 2000 indoor and outdoor conference meets and is an area of concentration for the Jacks coaching staff this season.

Jumps

The Lumberjacks signed freshman Kyle Thomas from San Manuel High School with a personal record of 6 feet 10 inches in the high jump. Thomas is a three-time Arizona state champion in the event. The jumps crew will rely on 2000 decathlete Nils Wiklund who participates in three of the four jumping events for the Lumberjacks and freshman Clarence Moore who will compete in the triple jump.

Pole Vault

The Jacks have sophomore Matt Axford returning who was a finalist in the 2000 indoor and outdoor conference championships with freshmen Albert Chaparro and Adam Mendonca who have P.R.’s in the event of 15 and 16 feet, respectively.

Multi-Events
Big Sky Champion Nils Wiklund returns for the Lumberjacks for his senior season. Wiklund returns after scoring 7,104 points in the decathlon last season at the Big Sky Championships and will be looked upon to lead the way for freshman Adam Mendonca; who looks to be the Lumberjacks’ future in the decathlon.

Throws

2000 Big Sky champion Sean McNabb returns as part of the talented throws-group coaching staff along with Lisa Misapeka. Senior Brandon Hall and sophomore Jeremy Hoff will be returners that should have break-out seasons, and throw in a variety of events. Hall and Hoff will need other performers tostep as well, to keep the standard that NAU has set in the past 10 years in the throwing events. Newcomer Andrew Baarson will be the added feature to this season’s line-up.

Distance

Always a strong component of NAU track and field, the distance crew has already produced two All-Big Sky selections that will compete with the 2001 track and field team -- Travis Laird and Henrik Ahnstrom -- both freshman who competed with the 2000 cross country team. The Lumberjacks lose key runners in three-time All-American Billy Herman and Big Sky champions Sean Clendaniel and Kevin Koeper, but return 5,000-meter Big Sky champion Juan Miramontes and short-distance performer Ryan Thomas. Junior transfer Bruno Mazzotta finished second for the Lumberjacks at the 2000 NCAA Cross Country Championships and will likely be a key contributor to the 2001 line-up.

Women’s TeamBACK TO TOP

The 2001 women’s team will return 23 individuals from the 2000 squad that finished 1st at the indoor conference championships. Led by seniors Linda Nestorsson, Asa Lonn, Summer Choe-McCollum and distance runners Amy Swier and Kendra Versendaal, the Lumberjacks will add only five freshmen to the roster and pick up three transfer students.

Below is a look into the 2001 season for the Lumberjacks:

Jumps

Asa Lonn represented the Lumberjacks at the NCAA Outoor Championships last season and finished in 9th-place in the triple jump. With the loss of four-time Big Sky Champion Brandi Prieto in the event, Lonn is the conference favorite for the individual title. Lonn will also compete in the long and high jump where she scored in both events for the Lumberjacks last season at the Big Sky meets.

Pole Vault

Junior Rosada Martin returns from the 2000 season and will take on most of the vaulting responsibilities for the Jacks this season. As a sophomore Martin placed 4th of 18 competitors at the indoor conference
championships while setting a personal record of 11-05.75 in the event.

Multi-events

With the loss of Big Sky Champion Petra Eklund, the Lumberjacks signed Arizona natives Patricia Ruggles and NJCAA All-American Jessica Stillion to be the heptathlon future at NAU. Stillion has recorded a personal record of 120 feet in the javelin and has a 65-second mark in the 400-meter
intermediate hurdles event.

Throws

One of the best throwers in NAU history, Linda Nestorsson returns for her final season at NAU. The Lumberjacks throws squad will be comprised of all seniors in Nestorsson, Andrea Hancock, Jessica Jelle and Jennifer Moon. Last season Nestorsson out threw all Big Sky competition in the shot put events and won the outdoor discus competition and was the only Lumberjack to compete at the NCAA Championships in both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Moon, an Iowa transfer, is a key addition to the throws group this season.

Distance

The Lumberjacks have two All-Americans on the team in Amy Swier and Kendra Versendaal who are cross country and distance specialists. Newcomer Susie Rutherford was the sole representative to the 2000 NCAA Cross Country championships where she finished 67th in the field and led the Lumberjacks in three of the team’s six meets. It will be a seasoned team leading into the 2001 season with only two freshmen -- Jinny Hanifan and Heidi Walker.
