About Tai Chi
Many attempts have been made to explain the essence of Tai Chi. Its roots are found in the art of Qi Gong (Qi is pronounced "chi"), internal energy work developed by Chinese Taoist monks. This internal energy work is a meditative practice that was and still is taught for its health benefits and increased longevity. However, during an era of oppression, these monks developed the self defense aspect of the art, Tai Chi Chuan, which translates to ‘Grand Ultimate Fist’. Strict principles of non-violence were adopted and excesses avoided, with the belief that all life is sacred.
Today Tai Chi and Qi Gong are practiced all over the world, by men and women alike, as a spiritual discipline, for health benefits and self defense. Both the physiological and psychological benefits of regular Tai Chi practice are well documented and studied as a means to personal stress management and whole person well-being. |
