THE FOLLOWING COURSES ARE THOSE THAT I TEACH.  THESE COURSES HAVE WEB ASSISTED SITES, BUT YOU MUST BE ENROLLED TO LOG ON.

SST 202 is an introductory course in phonetics: the science of speech sounds. This is a "leveling" course, required for entry to most graduate speech pathology programs.  SST 202  is part of NAU's BIS emphasis area and is offered on-line, as part of our Speech-Language Pathology Assistance training program.

SST 251 is an introductory course in anatomy and physiology. Students will gain a basic understanding of the form and function of the parts of the human body used for comunication. This course content is also required for entry to most graduate programs in speech-language pathology.  SST 251 is part of NAU's BIS emphasis area and is offered on-line, as part of our Speech-Language Pathology Assistance training program.

SST 375 is a course in speech and langauge sciences. Covering basic physics, acoustic phonetics and neurolinguistics, the course is essential to students who would pursue graduate study in human communication.

SST 405 is "Neurological Foundations of Speech, Language and Hearing." Advanced undergraduate and leveling graduate students take this course to develop a basis for understanding the neuroscience of communication.  SST 405  is part of NAU's BIS emphasis area.  This course has WEB support components, including the reading list, syllabus and outline of lectures, and has a full WEB-BASED version, currently off-line, but schedled to be updated in the summer of 2009.  Completion of SST 405 is required to enroll in SST 551.

SST 455C is the Capstone course for the BIS emphasis area. This course is a summitive experience for students for whom graduation is imminent. All other BIS emphasis area courses, with the exception of SST 456, Survey of Audiology, must be completed before enrolling in the capstone. SST 456 may be taken concurrently.

Philosophy of Teaching:

    Active learners, those who seek knowledge rather than waiting for it to seek them, are the most successful.  Active learners develop an inherent desire to acquire knowledge and skills that will last their entire lives.  They are motivated by the quest for means to help their patients rather than the urge to attain high marks.  The high marks will then take care of themselves.
    As a class instructor, I feel my role is that of one who has been part way down the path and through the woods and returns to help students with news of what to expect along the way.  Perhaps my experience will be of some use to them.  I have seen what awaited me along my journey, but each student will encounter unique turns and changes in footing.
    Thus, I encourage students to engage in class sessions, but to come prepared to focus on learning rather than remembering; on applying rather than regurgitating.  Lectures are intended to give the students the perspective of the learned and experienced lecturer in an atmosphere of trust. This trust assures the student that the instructor has set the proper goals and will open the proper doors to reach those goals.
