DIS  499/599: Farewell: Topic 1: Online Lesson and Response

Farewell

Week 16: 5/6 - 5/8

Online Lesson

Objective:

*    To consider how your definitions of the terms "principles", "practices", "family support", "self-determination", and "disability" have stayed the same or changed over the past 16 weeks

To complete this assignment successfully, you should read the following:

From the first Online Lesson of this course: "These definitions are just minimal interpretations of  words that are often used and effect the lives of people with disabilities, their families and service providers on a regular basis.  As you begin this course, ponder what these stark definitions mean to you.  For your eyes only, jot down what these words mean to you.  Keep your notes in your journal, in your computer or tucked away in your mindAt the end of the course we'll define these words again.  It will be interesting to see how the definitions will be enhanced after spending many weeks studying the true meaning and impact of these words."

From Webster's New World College Dictionary:

Principles: "...the ultimate source, origin, or cause of something...a fundamental truth, law, doctrine, or motivating force, upon which others are based, ..a rule of conduct..."

Practices:  "to do or engage in frequently or usually...to put knowledge into action...to teach or train through practice..."

Family:  "...all the people living in the same house...a social unit consisting of parents and the children they rear...a group of people related by ancestry or marriage..."

Support:  "...to carry or bear the weight of...to give courage, faith, or confidence to; help or comfort...to give approval to or be in favor of...to maintain or provide for with money, or subsistence..."

Self-Determination:  "...decision according to one's own mind or will...the right of a people to decide upon its own political status..."

Disability:  "...that which disables, as an illness, injury, or physical handicap...a legal disqualification or incapacity...something that restricts..."
