To complete this assignment successfully, you should:

  1. Read the material at the first three sites listed below (Summary of the Developmental Disabilities Assistance and Bill of Rights Act,  the New Freedom Initiative and the AZ Family Support Act of 1993).
  2. Choose ONE of the first three sites and reread the material, this time keeping in mind the 18 Core Concepts from the Beach Center (refer to this week's online lesson & VCC entry).
  3. Your assignment is to a) list the site you are responding to, b) name the Core Concepts that apply to the material and c) note the corresponding passage in the material that reflects that particular core concept.  You can "cut and paste" the passage you are referring to for this assignment.  No need to offer any further explanations or descriptions.  Keep it simple.  I just want to create awareness of how politics and principles blend.
  4. Email your response to the instructor by Sunday, February 17th at midnight.
  5. This assignment is worth 20 points.

The following sites are NOT required for this assignment, but I think you might find them interesting:

Thomas: Legislative Information on the Internet is a great place to find legislative information of all types on the Internet, including the following articles:

The Legislative Process - Tying it All Together
How Our Laws are Made

The AZ Division of Developmental Disabilities site.  This site will give you an overview of the agency.

Disabilities Direct.gov Caution, this site could be addictive if you’re an information junkie.  The section on civil rights and protections includes the ADA and other very important pieces of legislation that protect individuals with disabilities.

Partners in Policymaking is an innovative program developed in Minnesota in the late 1980's to give adults with disabilities and parents of young children with special needs the opportunity to develop leadership skills.

Have Fun!

OPTIONAL:  Each week I'll give you a link to a disability-specific website.  This is FYI if you are interested in building a disability-related resource file.   The postings will be sites I have found, or sites that students have forwarded to me.  Inclusion of the websites on this page does not imply the instructor's, or NAU's,  endorsement of the content of the website.
