DIS  499/599: Module 4: Topic 1, Reading Assignment

Module 4: Identifying and Coordinating Resources

Topic 1:   Emerging Models of Family Support and The Role of the Family Support Facilitator

Week 9: 3/18 - 3/24

Online Reading

Objectives:

*    To raise awareness of subtle distinctions between job descriptions and expectations for different professional titles

*    To identify characteristics of effective family support workers

To complete this assignment successfully, you should:

1.    Read the following article.

2.        Write a short reaction paper (at least 300 words) to this reading.  Take a concept from this paper and develop your thoughts and reaction to it.

In a short explanatory essay you can't possibly say everything there is to say, or that you want to say, about a concept.  Make some choices about what aspect of the article you want to emphasize.   Stay on track by clearly defining your concept.  A good writing strategy helps.  Some writers compare and contrast a concept.  Others report a cause and effect.  Narration through storytelling works, too.

Here are a few ideas for getting started with an essay; 1) Does the concept interest the writer and will it interest the reader?, 2) What is most important in this article?, 3) Is there anything surprising or unusual?, and 4) What is the significance of this information for the reader or the writer?

3.        This assignment is worth 20 points and is due by midnight on Sunday, March 24th.
