COURSE PREREQUISITES

Undergraduate Courses Required Prior to Entering the CSD Program
Math, University Level: 3 credit hours (e.g., College Algebra, Calculus, University Statistics, etc.)
Biological Sciences: 3 credit hours (e.g., Biology, Anatomy, Physiology, Genetics, etc.)
Physical Sciences: 3 credit hours (e.g., Physics, Chemistry, Geology, Botany, etc.)
Social/Behavioral Sciences: 3 credit hours (e.g., Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, Political Science, etc.)

Prerequisites for Entering the Full-Time (Non-Leveler) or Summers-Only Track
Any student beginning the Full-Time (non-leveler) track or the Summers-Only track in Communication Sciences and Disorders must have successfully completed the following courses before entry into the program.1 If you have taken courses from another institution that you believe will meet any of the following prerequisites, please be prepared to submit either a class syllabus or a course description from the academic catalog of the institution where the class was taken. The CSD Admissions Committee will assess course equivalency.

The prerequisite SST courses, listed below, are offered through the Health Sciences undergraduate department at NAU; some of the classes may be offered in an online format.2 If you want to find out which of the following courses are offered online for any particular semester, you may go to the NAU Home Page, http://home.nau.edu/. Under Quick Links, select Louie online > Class Search/Browse Catalog. At the next step, which is Class Search, select the semester you want under Term and click GO > for Course Subject, choose SST and for Campus, choose Online; hit Search. You will now see the SST online courses offered during the semester you selected earlier.

SST 202:  PHONETICS (3)
Sounds of the American language, emphasizing acoustic and physiologic aspects of articulation development and assessment. CU

SST 251:  ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY OF SPEECH AND LANGUAGE (3)
Structure and function of the mechanisms used in speech and language.

SST 350:  COMMUNICATION DEVELOPMENT IN CHILDREN (3)
Normal development of speech and language, including the relationship of perceptual, cognitive, social-emotional, motor, and communicative factors; emphasis on language and articulatory systems as well as articulation and language acquisition.

SST 375:  SPEECH-LANGUAGE SCIENCES (3)
Addresses the fundamentals of the sciences pertaining to articulation, voice, and language. Prerequisite: (CSD 202 or SST 202) and (CSD 251 or SST 251) or International Student Group.

SST 376:  HEARING SCIENCE (3)
Introduces the normal hearing process; focusing on the peripheral auditory systems, coding of the basic attributes of sound, and the perception of simple sounds.

SST 405:  NEUROLOGICAL FOUNDATIONS OF SPEECH, LANGUAGE, AND HEARING (3)
Applies the principles of neuroanatomy and neurophysiology to the study of normal human communication. Special Exception: *The equivalent of this course (CSD 508) will be added to any CSD graduate program of study if this requirement was not met prior to entry into the program.

SST 456:  SURVEY OF AUDIOLOGY (3)
Anatomy and physiology of the auditory system; acoustics and psychoacoustics of hearing; hearing conservation. Prerequisite: (CSD 202 or SST 202) and (CSD 251 or SST 251) and (CSD 350 or SST 350) and (CSD 375 or SST 375) and (CSD 376 or SST 376) or International Student Group.

NOTES: 1These courses are already included as part of the standard program of study for Full-Time, Leveler students but must be completed prior to entry for Summers-Only and Full-Time, Non-Leveler Students. 2If you want to take any of these courses prior to applying for admission to the CSD program, please see the SST course listings in the NAU Academic Catalog.
