CITADEL POLYCHROME
DESCRIPTION: Construction: by coiling and scraping. Fired: finished in oxidizing atmosphere. Core: black to gray, dark brown (rare), to brick red. Carbon streak: common. Temper: mostly soft, light colored whitish or yellowish angular fragments of sherd, usually lesser amount of quartz sand; occasionally isolated grains of basalt; conspicuous in cross section of reddish color; noticeable on surface. Vessel walls: medium strong to strong. Texture Core: fine. Fracture: slightly crumbling to shattering. Surface finish: bowls usually smooth; occasionally bumpy; polished; horizontal polishing marks conspicuous around sides; exterior bowl surfaces slipped, except that broad unslipped stripe often occurs just below rim; base generally unslipped; slip generally thick with temper extruding; often crazed; slip flakes off large areas of heavily weathered sherds leaving core mottled with temper. Surface color: exterior red; interior orange; color interior surface and core generally do not contrast. Form: bowl. Thickness: bowls: 2.6 to 7.0 mm; average about 4.8 mm. Decoration: painted black and red, confined to interior.

CORE: Construction: by coiling and scraping. Fired: finally in oxidizing atmosphere Core: gray, light brown to brick-red Carbon streak: fairly common. Temper: about equal amounts of quartz sand and crushed sherd; temper noticeable on surfaces, sometimes conspicuous especially on worn or polished surfaces. Vessel walls: medium to strong. Texture core: medium. Fracture: slightly crumbling to shattering. Surface finish: bowls, usually somewhat bumpy, sometimes polished; scraping and polishing marks often invisible but sometimes conspicuous, sometimes pitted, both surfaces of bowls compacted. Surface color: orange, color surface and core contrast when core is gray. Fire clouds: common. Forms: bowls, dippers, jars; bowls have single horizontal handle; jars have vertical handles; bases of vessels generally depressed. Thickness: bowls: 3.7 to 6.8 mm; average 5.1 mm. jars: 2.5 to 10.5 mm; average about 5.4 mm. Decoration: none.
