TSEGI POLYCHROME
DESCRIPTION
CORE: Construction: by coiling. Fired: in oxidizing atmosphere. Core: gray to pinkish. Temper: about equal amounts of quartz sand and crushed sherd; temper noticeable on surfaces, sometimes conspicuous especially on worn or polished surfaces. Vessel walls: medium strong. Texture core: medium. Fracture: slightly crumbling to shattering. Surface finish: bowls, usually somewhat bumpy, sometimes polished; scraping and polishing marks often invisible but sometimes conspicuous, compacted or polished. Surface color: orange, color surface and core usually do not contrast. Slip: absent. Fire clouds: common. Forms: bowls. Thickness: 4.3 to 5.9 mm. Painted decoration: black and red. Pigment: red is iron oxide. Decoration: interior bowls four narrow black lines encircling vessel just below rim; exterior red stripe below rim; red rim.
RANGE: Recorded only from the Tsegi Canyons, Navajo County, Arizona.
