What
now?
This course sought to inspire the student to:
(1) think about your personal perceptions of and relationship with nature;
(2) understand both historically and contemporarily how western society
has perceived of and behaved toward nature;
(3) explore how cultural perceptions of nature influence our individual
ways of thinking about nature;
(4) explore how varying social structures, particularly the economy and
the political system, support certain approaches toward nature.
MOST OF ALL, I hope that you come out of this course thinking about how
you can affect positive social change. There are many levels in which
you can act. I encourage you to not only think in terms of how others
ask you to help. Most of us come in contact with causes that encourage
such things as recycling or cleaning up our neighborhoods. While these
are positive and important and something we can all get involved in, I
hope you think about the deeper structural and cultural changes necessary
toward moving ourselves and society into a more positive relationship
with nature. This requires creative thinking. It requires you to THINK
OUTSIDE OF WHAT EXISTS TODAY AND IMAGINE WHAT CAN EXIST TOMORROW and what
steps are necessary to get there.
