  Researching Environmental Issues

Choose ONE of the following research projects:
Media and the Environment
Genetic Engineering
Globalization and the Environment


1. Highlight Suzuki and Dressel’s main points and arguments around your topic.

  • Media and the Environment (chapter 3)
  • Genetic Engineering (chapters 4 and 5)
  • Globalization (chapters 6 and 7)

2. Find AT LEAST 3 other sources that explore your research issue (obtain sources that present alternative arguments/visions).
Sources can come in the form of:

  • Book (authoritative on the subject)
  • Academic Journal Article

Outline the main argument presented in these sources and compare/contrast to Suzuki and Dressel’s treatment of the subject.

3. What is the main social issue that must be addressed with regard to this topic? Why is this a social issue?

4. After assessing this material, present YOUR ANALYSIS of the issue. Address ALL of the following questions:

a. Explanation: Develop a detailed explanation of the structural and cultural factors that underlay the issue.
b. Sociological Insight: Discuss the larger meaning/significance of this issue as it pertains to larger societal questions.
c. Perspective/Self Knoweldge: Consider the plausibility of the perspectives you have researched and offer your take on the issue.
