The Foundation Requirements will help you develop competence in writing, critical reading, and mathematical reasoning and computation.
English (4 hours)
ENG 105: Critical Reading and Writing in the University (4)
NAU's English composition requirement consists of ENG 105 (4 hours). ENG 105 and
the University Colloquium work in tandem to offer students two seminar experiences during their
first year at NAU. English 105 cannot be taken during the same semester as the University Colloquium.
The composition requirement may also be satisfied by successfully completing (C or better) ENG
101 and 102, or their equivalents, at an accredited university or community college for a total
of 6 credit hours.
Entering students with high standardized test scores may take the composition placement exam (23 or higher on the ACT; 530 or higher on the SAT). For more information, see the section in the Undergraduate Catalog entitled "Placement Exams" or contact the English Composition office at (520) 523-6842. Transfer students who have completed ENG 101, or its equivalent, with a grade of B or higher, may take the placement exam. Passing this exam results in 2 credits toward graduation and entrance into ENG 205 for 2 credit hours (4 total). Contact the English Composition office for more information.
Mathematics (3 hours)
MAT 114 Quantitative Reasoning (3) or otherStudents satisfy the Liberal Studies Foundation requirement in mathematics by completing any current NAU course (or equivalent transfer course) carrying at least three hours of credit with an MAT or STA prefix except MAT 101X, 102X, 108, or 150 (or equivalent), including any such course specifically listed as a requirement for a student's major or minor. Students in majors that do not require a specific mathematics course are advised to take MAT 114 to satisfy their mathematics foundation requirement. Students should consult with their academic advisor concerning what mathematics course is appropriate for their major. Please note that the course used for the mathematics foundation requirement cannot also count toward the distribution studies requirement.
