Etiology

Unclear

Immunologic pathogenesis involving cell mediated immunity

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Predilection

Young adults

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Location

Oral mucosa not covering bone

Often in posterior region of oral cavity

 

 

 

 

 

 

Clinical Appearance

Painful, discrete, round to oval, yellowish-white ulcers with a erythematous halo

Greater than 1 cm in diameter

Deeper than aphthous minor

May last several weeks

Often causes scarring

Treatment

Topical or systemic corticosteoids

Biopsy to rule out other causes
