Some people would consider
this a Siberian Expedition, a Russian Expedition or Russian Ecotourism.
We are proud to offer it as a summer class offered by the
Center for Environmental Sciences and Education and the School of Forestry at Northern Arizona University.
Join us for OIS 499/599
National Parks and Forest Resouces in Siberia
:
an Ecological and Political Investigation
Hike and raft through Mountains on the Pacific Rim. The disappearing mountain steppe ecosystems
remain rugged, remote and
biologically diverse. The Russian brown bear, musk deer and elk
inhabit the forests while
salmon fill the streams and a diverse range of fauna
live in the geologically
fascinating temparate/marine forests. This course is designed
to introduce you to the ecology
and geography of the region, and then investigate the challenges and
successes of individuals
and Russian agencies struggling to protect the natural resources of
the area. The class will meet scientists, non-government organizations,
policy makers and regional resource managers to investigate the challenges
and rewards of working in this remote land.
We will have two days in Moscow and then fly to Petropavlovsk. From there we will visit two nature preserves
and local villages during a 18-
day field expedition. We will visit two immense nature preserves, the
Kronotsky Zapovednik (1.2 million acres) and the Nalychevo Zakaznik (300,000 acres).
These preserves were set aside by the federal government specifically to
conduct ecological research and are unique to the former Soviet Union.
The salmon runs and wild mountains have been the
site of an intense political debate to create a national park pitting
environmental and economic
forces against each other. The class will meet participants in
the debate such as non-
government organizations, policy makers and regional resource managers.
