Visit: Engineering Course Descriptionsl for information on prerequistes

Course objectives:

This course is designed to introduce students to existing environmental protection strategies used in the United States and elsewhere and to examine recent developments in those strategies that suggest how they may change in the future.  Students will learn fundamental legal and regulatory principles applicable to the areas of air pollution, water pollution, waste management, and other environmental issues.  Students also will learn how to use research materials available on the Internet to answer questions presented by realistic case studies.  In addition, each student will receive experience in making formal presentations to a class audience using visual aids and in preparing a detailed research paper.

Course structure/approach:

The course will use a seminar format, with an emphasis on student involvement in class problem-solving and discussion.   A detailed case study will be used throughout the semester to present realistic environmental issues for class discussion and group projects.  Lectures and assigned readings will provide substantive information on topics relevant class discussions and case study projects.  Class discussion topics, assigned readings, case study information and questions, homework assignments, and relevant research materials will be available via the class home page on the World Wide Web.  In addition to a mid-term and a final exam, students will prepare a research paper on a topic approved by the instructors.

Textbook and required materials:

Required and recommend readings will include US Environmental Protection Agency publications on assigned topics; other writings on assigned topics; and related statutes, regulations, and court cases.  All required and recommended readings will be provided, cited, or accessible on the Internet.
