Lintel Loads

Example

Consider a one-course high lintel (h=8") with d = 6.5". The ungrouted running bond wall has a f `m = 1500 psi. Determine the lintel loads and draw the corresponding shear and moment diagrams.

  1. Draw the 45° triangle to "capture" those loads on lintel.

    1. Since the roof load, wL, is above the apex of the triangel, it is carried by arch action around the opening to the walls on either side of the opening. It is not considered part of the lintel design load.

  2. The lintel then carries:
    1. Its own dead weight as a uniform load and
    2. The wall dead weight directly above the lintel which is triangular in shape.
    3. Loading diagrams:

  3. Shear and moment diagrams:
    1. Since Mmax occurs at the beam center-line for both load cases, it is permissible to calculate each load case separately and superimpose center-line results.

    2. Superimposing results: Vmax = 628.2 lbs and Mmax = 1646.2 ft-lbs.
