Solid-Sawn

Sub-Module Objectives:
In this sub-module, an introduction to wood as a structural material is provided. Particular attention is given to solid sawn lumber by examining how it is used, growth characteristics, and the species groupings as related to its allowable stress properties.

Sub-Module Directions:
Two class days will be devoted to this sub-module. To complete this sub-module, you will need to:
  1. Study the 3 sets of on-line lecture notes.
  2. Go to CE436 Timber Structures and study the class notes on:
    1. Slide Show
    2. Structure and Physical Properties
    3. Mechanical Properties
    4. Moisture Content
  3. Complete the reading assignment.
  4. Come to class prepared to discuss the following:
    • Day 1: the 3-sets of hypernotes.
    • Day 2: the supplemental material from CE436 Timber Structures.
  5. Complete the homework assignment and submit on day 2.

Problem Assignment:
Complete the following questions found in your text book by Breyer.
