Answers to all those questions

Your teachers and students

Q: Do teachers need to speak Spanish to implement these programs?

A: No. We assume that many do not, so we invite them to become our learning partners as active participants, role models, and language learners along with the students. Teachers who do know Spanish can use our program as a baseline for curriculum development and extension.

Q: Our students have never taken Spanish. Which program should we us?

A: Unlike our other Spanish programs, educación española must be taken in successive lesson-order to fully understand the material. The second year of instruction is a continuation of the first year and builds on the concepts covered in the first 50 lessons.

Q: We currently have a Spanish teacher. What can the educación española on videotape do for us?

A: Your current Spanish teacher can use our videotaped programs and 600-page teacher’s guide as a baseline for curriculum development or to expand the existing curriculum. Add Spanish to the classroom one or two days a week more by having the classroom teachers play our videos. The students will learn much more Spanish with the additional language exposure.

Q: Do you have a teacher orientation or in-service?

A: Each teacher’s guide has a six-page Welcome Letter and Program Preview. Teachers should read these sections before starting lessons.

Our curriculum

Q: Where can we expect our students to be after these two years of instruction?

A: A student successfully completing both years of educación española (lessons 1-100) can expect to have the knowledge acquired in a high school or college-level Spanish I course.

Q: What is the basis of your curriculum development?

A: Instruction is based on a comparative/contrastive analysis of Spanish vis-à-vis the English language. We incorporate the National Standards for Foreign Language Learning within the context of a culturally rich environment. This approach to teaching language allows us to teach Spanish while also reviewing key language concepts of English. We incorporate an extensive authentic cultural strand throughout our curriculum focusing on history, cultural, and contemporary life.

Q: How are your programs used?

A: The program may be used as core curriculum, enrichment, Gifted/TAG, or as before or after school courses.
