Where in the World do Spanish-Speakers Live?
Spanish-Speaking Countries in North America
Spanish-Speaking Countries in North America:
Traditionally, Mexico is the only Spanish-speaking country in North America if we consider Central America apart. However, many people in the United States are Spanish speakers. In fact, Los Angeles has more Mexicans than any city on the planet except Mexico City. No other city in Mexico has more!
Mexicans are not the only Spanish speakers living in the United States. There are Spanish speakers from many countries living here, and some people who are born in the United States speak Spanish as their first language.
Even though Mexico is a Spanish-speaking country officially, there are many Native American languages spoken in Mexico, as well as languages that immigrants from all over the world who live there speak. Even so, Mexico has more Spanish speakers than any other country in the world.
Mexico has 31 states. Its capital is a federal district. Washington, D.C., the capital of the U.S., is also a federal district. Some parts of Mexico are deserts, but there are also forests, mountains, snowy volcanoes, and tropical rain forests.
Here is a map of Mexico. Use a reference book to help you find the placement of the state names and capital. If you have a printer connected to your computer, print out this page and write in the state names on the map. When you're done, please check your answers with the Answer Key.
