TEXT TAPE

A special audio tape accompanies new copies of the Puntos text. If you buy a used copy, purchase the audio tape for $3 in BAA 105 (hours will be posted on the door). This tape focuses on pronunciation and is optional. You do need the tapes used with the Lab Manual. Buy the first for $3 and return it to receive the next tape at no additional cost. A practical alternative to buying and exchanging tapes is to access the material at this web site: http://art.artsci.nau.edu/spa101/puntos. These tapes are regular homework to be done in the Lab Manual.

INTRODUCTION

SPA 101 is an introduction to the Spanish language for students with little or no previous experience or formal study in Spanish. You will explore many cultures within the Spanish-speaking world while developing skills in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing the language. Upon successful completion of this class you will be able to communicate in simple Spanish about yourself, your family and friends, and your present daily activities. The language of instruction is primarily Spanish.

PROFICIENCY GOALS

The following describes the types of tasks that you should be able to accomplish upon completion of this course with a passing grade. Students desiring to attain above average or superior proficiency will need to set higher goals.
SPEAKING: Students will ask and answer questions, initiate and respond verbally to simple statements, participate in simple conversations, and express basic needs
WRITING: Students will write simple, fixed expressions in Spanish, exhibit knowledge of the essentials of Spanish spelling and punctuation.
READING: Students will Interpret written language that contains high-frequency vocabulary, mostly relating to everyday uses (i.e., functions) of the Spanish language, determine the meaning of words and passages using background knowledge and visual organizers.
LISTENING: Students will demonstrate comprehension of words and phrases from simple spoken questions, statements, high frequency commands, and courtesy formula.
CULTURE: Students will recognize non-verbal cultural norms, describe cultural practices and characteristics of areas where Spanish is spoken, demonstrate the ability to interact appropriately with Spanish speakers according to the formality of a situation.
A common misconception among language students is that the proficiency they attain depends on their instructor. The primary responsibilities of the instructor are to expose you to the language and to advise you on how to meet proficiency objectives. It is essential that you be in class regularly, but attendance alone will not ensure that you achieve these goals. It is your own efforts in class (e.g., by participating in class discussions, being productive in group work) and outside of class that will ensure your success this semester.

CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES

1. Oral production exercises, drills, dialogues, and short monologues
2. Listening and reading comprehension exercises
3. Writing practice, composition, and dictation
4. Grammar practice, workbook, laboratory, and computer drills
5. Introduction of Hispanic civilizations, cultures, and music

HOMEWORK

Recommended: 2-3 hours outside of class for each class meeting.

PORTFOLIO

Your portfolio will contain all of your work for this course. Use a light-weight paper folder with two pockets. Corrected homework is kept in the left-hand pocket and new work in the right-hand pocket. Write your name and section number on the cover, upper right-hand corner.

WORKBOOK and LAB MANUAL

The practices in the Puntos Workbook and Lab Manual are designed to help you master Spanish and are an excellent preparation for exams. Corrections are in the back of the book. It is your responsibility to use these materials effectively, completing each exercise as topics are practiced in class. The Workbook and Lab Manual will be turned in on exam days.

LAB ACTIVITIES

The Department has a LLC (Language Learning Center) available for student use (Summer hours are 2:00-7:00 PM, Monday through Thursday). You will be introduced to the lab during the first week of class. You are encouraged to utilize the various programs available in the lab to work on pronunciation, grammar and listening comprehension.

EXAMS

EXAMS: There will be three chapter tests assessing your aural and written proficiency. There are no make up exams.
ORAL EXAM: A major assessment of your speaking abilities will be conducted at the end of the first session, providing you with an opportunity to demonstrate your abilities to communicate about every-day topics and situations in Spanish.
Remember: All exams are cumulative. Information you learn through spaced repetition stays with you longer than information you "cram." Daily study periods of shorter duration are more productive in the long run than marathon study sessions just before an exam.
