The following is an outline of "WORKING WORDS: An Expository Paradigm that Works," by Dr. Dowling Campbell. The complete version will be available on our web site. You will be required to follow this format for papers in this course. Your paper on Lord of the Flies is due on 2/17. The model presented by Dr. Campbell in "Working Words" utilizes examples from Lord of the Flies. Utilize the outline below to evaluate and reorganize at least one of the papers you’ve done in this course thus far.

I. Titles
A. Informational
B. Inspirational

II. Introductory Paragraph (five sentences max. with no argument, examples, extended definitions , or detailed background.)
A. Opening line: author, title and argument
B. Development (one or two sentences)
    1. orientation in time and place,
    2. general observation or application
    3. sense of justification
C. Thesis statement (final sentence breaking down argument into 3-4 steps)

III. Body (paper’s argument; includes same number and type of paragraphs for each thesis item)
A. Descriptive/theory paragraph (one for each item in thesis statement).
No quotes; just state what the item does, how it works, or what it looks
like.)
B. Example/analysis paragraph (cite/quote and provide one for each thesis
statement item)
C. Opinion paragraph (one for each thesis statement item)

IV. Concluding Paragraph (Try to avoid "In conclusion, In summary." Keep quotes to a minimum)
A. Functions
    1. aesthetic
    a. sends message that you are ending the paper
    2. summary
    a. summarizes points made earlier in the paper
    3. generalization
    a. functions as a summary without being a summary
    4. recommendation
    a. projects argument to persuasion rather than analysis
