Goal Setting and Observation Planning

Teachers deserve to know exactly:

  1. Who will be evaluating him/ her
  2. What to expect in a planning conference.
  3. Whether they have a choice of focus areas
  4. What strategies will be used to collect evidence of the criteria
  5. What criteria will be used to assess instruction
  6. How the different areas of teaching will be evaluated

This process varies depending on the level of experience of the teacher being evaluated. Beginning teachers or teachers or teachers new to the district may have no choices as to what will be evaluated, while veteran teachers may have many. However, even first year teachers know their specific needs and this is an opportunity to provide support and feedback.

Giving teachers information or tips on where to find resources along with time to practice enhances their motivation and enthusiasm. Some say they actually look forward to having someone observe after they have had time to digest and practice a new or developing skill. Could it be that more learning occurs for the teacher between the planning conference and classroom observation as a result of practice than between the post conference and the next planning conference? It is worth further investigation.
