Lodging Tax Rates

Lodging taxes are controversial for sure. Some hotel managers and operators have a hard time justifying the burden they place on their guests from the exorbitant lodging taxes they pay. They feel that local taxes should be borne by local residents not by tourists or corporate visitors. After all, isn't that taxation without representation??

In Flagstaff, the rate is just over 8 percent, not bad. In New York City, the rate is just over 18 percent. And that's not the highest taxed city in the USA!!

For this assignment, you are asked to take about 20 minutes and identify the lodging tax rates in three cities of your choosing. Here's what you need to do:

  1. You are asked to learn about lodging taxes in three separate cities of your choosing.

  2. To select the cities for this assignment, use the first letter of your last name. The names of each city should begin with the same letter as the first letter of your last name. Aside from that, there are no rules. Choose any cities anywhere in the world. A total of three.

  3. How you find the tax rate is up to you, but you must use the Internet and somehow prove the rate to me. But aside from that there are no rules. For example, you could pull up a hotel page and query through e-mail the reservations department of that hotel to learn the rate (if so, forward their e-mail response). You could pull up a Chamber of Commerce or Convention Visitor's Bureau home page(s) and find the tax rate listed there. Or you could...
Use the textbox below to provide the following information:
The names of the three cities you investigated, a URL to the lodging tax rates for each city, or an explanation on how you will provide that information (e.g., you will forward an email to me, etc). Of course you can write me a note or two so I can understand your process.
