Information technology can be used to unleash the immense intellectual power of the brain, a super bio computer. Information tools such as word processors, spreadsheets, idea generators, and graphics packages, stimulate creative thinking, facilitate the organization and analysis of ideas and information, and enable problems to be solved more comprehensively and rapidly.

This module identifies attributes exhibited by high quality software and tasks performed by operating systems. It discusses the basic functions performed by general-purpose applications: word processing, electronic spreadsheets, presentation graphics, and database management. You will also learn about personal information and contact managers and integrated software.

This module is divided into three topical areas: Description of Software Assessing Software Quality Generic Software Applications

The lesson objectives for this module are for you to: Distinguish between system and application software. Understand the tasks performed by an operating system. Learn about flowcharting and programming concepts and languages. Understand the difference between customized software and prepackaged applications. Identify attributes exhibited by high quality software. Describe the purpose and general function of these software tools: word processing, electronic spreadsheet, database management, personal information and contact managers, and presentation graphics.
