Lodging: History, Supply, Demand, and Structure

The following three chapters introduce you to management opportunities in the lodging industry, an industry that greatly impacts a country's economic, social, and cultural development. It contributes big time to national and local economies, in terms of employment and tax revenues. This first chapter (Chapter 6) traces the lodging industry's supply side (with its organizational structure), the demand side, and the link between these two: sales.

Objectives:
1. Be able to explain the scope of the lodging industry and be able to list categories of lodging supply. (pp. 165-179)
2. Know how the hotel business is structured and organized. (pp. 179-186)
3. Understand the components of market demand and segments. (pp. 186-193)
4. Understand how personal sales links market segments with lodging products (pp. 193-197)
