Whitney Roberts, Health Sciences: Community Health, was selected as the CHHS Distinguished Senior for Spring 2008. Others selected from their areas were Molly Murphy, Health Sciences: SST; Rebecca Kilzer, Athletic Training; Joni Podmanik, Dental Hygiene; Kristin Flin, Health Sciences: PE & School Health; Jennifer Baldenegro, School of Nursing. Criteria for the award includes academic performance, contributions and service to their academic area and involvement in department-related activities. |
| GOLD AXE AWARDS |
Recipients of the Spring 2008 Gold Axe Award were Molly Murphy, Health Sciences: SST; Laura Foster, Health Sciences: SST; James Duncan, Dental Hygiene. James Duncan was also the recipient of the President's Prize, considered the highest student recognition from the university. In 1933, the student government of NAU adopted the tradition of awarding gold axe pins to outstanding members of the student body. To this day, the gold axe pin is considered the official emblem of the Association of Students and is still presented to recognize outstanding achievement and distinguished service to the university and greater community. |

Dr. Debbie Craig, Program Director for the Athletic Training Education Program, has been selected as the 2008 Rocky Mountain Athletic Trainers' Association Distinguished Educator Award. The primary objective of this award is to recognize those individuals who exemplify excellence in the field of athletic training education. |
| SEAL OF ASSESSMENT RECOGNITION |
Congratulations to the School of Nursing for recognition for degree program accomplishments with the inaugural Seal of Assessment Achievement for the BSN Nursing Program. Congratulations also to the Department of Dental Hygiene and the Department of Physical Therapy & Athletic Training. The DPT Physical Therapy degree program, the BS Athletic Training degree program, and the BSDH Dental Hygiene degree program also received inaugural Seal of Assessment Achievement Awards. |

NAU's graduate Physical Therapy Program ranks among the best in the nation according to U.S. News & World Report's annual ranking of America's Best Graduate Schools. Mark Cornwall. chair of the department, noted that the faculty here at NAU is very well known for its accomplishements and that helps garner recognition for the program. |
| SPEECH PATHOLOGY MAJOR CREDITS NAU WITH HER FIRST AID TRAINING |
Senior Speech Pathology major, Brigitte Borcuta, was able to be a first responder after a woman was hit by a car at an intersection in Phoenix. Borcuta was able to open the woman's airway and stabilized her neck before the paramedics arrived. The CPR and First Aid Training class that Borcuta took teaches students to feel prepared to respond to an emergency situation. Most of the learning in the class is done through hands-on experience so that students will be prepared if they ever have to put what they learned into practice. |

| RWJF GRANT |
Health Science faculty members, Dr. Cruz Begay and Dr. Roger Bounds, received a $435,987, three-year grant from Robert Wood Johnson Foundation for a work-based learning project with front line workers in Tribal and IHS hospitals. Their project was one of eight projects funded out of 200 proposals submitted. Pathways to Health is the oversight committee for this grant. |
