Reading about students is important. There is a lot to learn by meeting with a youngster and talking with parents. Complete a case history on a person who fits one of the ten categories. Lots can be learned from talking with teachers and other professionals the youth wants you to meet. A social history need not be detailed, though an example of one way to interview a student is provided by clicking here.

Directions: Approach a social history with a template of ideas and then develop a series of interview questions that you believe will get to the special things you hope to learn about a student. Then adapt the questions and interview as the discussion warms up. Please provide 8-10 questions that you feel you could use effectively in a discussion. It usually works best to make them specific to the type of disability you are researching.

Plan to review the workbook chapters on various categories of exceptionalities you will be discussing prior to your interview.

To complete this assignment successfully, you should:

  1. Review material about youngsters with the issues you are hoping to learn more about .
  2. Dress professionally for the interview.
  3. Be on time.

Good: Interview was held, several points offered, addressed the question, summary statement provided
Marginal: Interview skirts the question rather than discussing it, few or no examples provided, may be missing summary. The student will receive assistance in sharpening the process.
