You learned about various challenges children face as you read the text and accessed the secret web files. Children with these challenges and exceptionalities need education that is supportive. Now it is your turn to reflect on what we know about students and the ways that educators can make a difference.

Assignment:

In this 4-6 page paper [about 1000 words] explore some of the methods used to move from "protecting" children by keeping them isolated to our present mandate of balancing one child's needs with the needs of the learning community.

A case study is similar to a snap shot.

Let us suppose you are interested in Autism. To present a case study you would:

  1. Read a story or book about Autism, perhaps also watch a movie or documentary clip
  2. Meet a child with autism and observe them at home and in school if possible.
  3. Talk with parents or a teacher of a child with some form of autism.
  4. Research current information - Begin with medical definitions, read the chapter in the book (pp. 522-531), review articles in journals - Example Exceptional Children.
  5. Write the case study

To access literature on educational ideas you may want to look up:
  1. Inclusion
  2. Cascade of Services
  3. Collaboration
  4. Methods and Materials in Special Education
  5. Facilitated Communication or Communication Board

Case Study

  1. Vignette that is poignant and provides a snap shot of a youngster with the concerns you are addressing in your paper
  2. Overarching statement that summarizes your position and thinking
  3. Discussion that brings in the data from your 2 - 4 research authorities
  4. Further insights from your own observations - could be personal, from data collected in spending time with the youngster, in reading first person accounts, history taken from parents or family members
  5. Summary statement
  6. References - in APA style [Need to know what that looks like? - see the References, starting on p. 573 of the Smith text, and pattern them after those examples].

Rubric
Excellent: 500 - 1000 words, well organized, addresses case study format, examples shared, cogent perspective advanced, summary statement pulls material together.
Good: 500+ words, organized, several points offered, addressed the question, summary statement provided
Marginal: may be missing summary, or final statement may not address the essay question. The student will receive assistance in sharpening the essay.
