Teacher as Peacemaker

1. As a teacher, you will often find the need to explore the feelings of various stake holders and meet the divergent needs of parents, students, administration, other educators and your own agenda, or belief system. You will also find many situations where parties are not in agreement.

What peacemaking skills will you need to acquire if you hope to resolve school issues about serving students appropriately?

Suppose you are a newspaper correspondent and have a good understanding of IDEA 97. You are contacted by the parents of a youngster who is Learning Disabled. They want you to write about the barriers they see at the school when they tried to get help for their son, Luke. You have very strong feelings about this because your younger brother had similar problems in school and was not served well. You decide to write a feature story about Luke, the parents, and the school. Once you get started, you realize that you have a lot of power to create trouble or make the situation better for the boy.

You decide to be the peacemaker! Write a short feature, describing the meeting and outcome you devise when you meet with the parents and school, not just reporting on what is happening, but doing a prize winning job of helping each side to do what will really work for Luke..
