Bonding is nearly automatic and crucial -- "flirting" is a newborn response

Trust vs. Mistrust
When child cries and needs are met the infant understands self and world as a safe and warm, welcoming place

  • comfort crying and fretting behaviors
  • gentle motions are most soothing
  • feeding is nurturing - hold the baby and talk or sing
  • sucking gives comfort
  • interact positively during baths, holding, diaper changes

Tantrums and crying rages are not done to hurt the caregiver
The infant needs help regaining control and being comforted.
